PEBBLES ON THE BEACH

PEBBLES ON THE BEACH

As I descend the hill
To the wintry water’s edge
The sheer wind is keen
But seems to go straight through
Chilling to the core
As I listen to the waves
As they beat upon the shore
Shingling, shingling,
With the sound I love so well
As seagulls mount upon the wind
Complete the seaside scene
As sand and seaweed, stones and pebbles
Spangle out around the bay.

Yet I am so critical, so analytical
As the structures of my mind increase my pain
A seagull wheeling on the wind
Complete in nature more than I
Begins to call
‘I know more than you’
